Wimbledon Chase Primary School has now completed an expansion programme from 2FE to 3FE and now caters for 21 classes of 30 pupils, plus a large nursery. The school has gained a new building containing extra classrooms, group rooms, IT suite, cookery room and music room. We also have Wrap Around Care including a Breakfast Club, Full Day Nursery and After School Club. We are an inclusive school with an Additionally Resourced Provision (ARP unit) for pupils with Speech, Language and Communication Needs. The children are part of the mainstream classes but also have the benefit of specialist help and attention in the ARP. The school does have extensive grounds consisting of two large playing fields for football, hockey, rugby, plus an all-weather cricket square. Unfortunately no provision was made within the expansion of the school for any suitable all-weather sports' courts facilities. The school therefore lacks any all weather hard surface facilities for sports. The only courts area for the whole school consists of two very overgrown tennis courts which are in a very poor condition, unsafe and beyond repair. There is also a need to provide improved changing facilities as the school's current pavilion/changing rooms are very old (over 40 years old and are generally 'not fit for purpose'.
The children are provided with many opportunities to develop and pursue their talents. Our programme of extra curricular clubs and activities is rich and varied. However, the lack of suitable hard court areas has an impact on the range of curricular and competitive sports that the school can provide for the pupils. Now that there are 3 classes in each year group it is often impossible to provide enough outside space for a whole year group at one time. Currently the only usable hard surface area is our normal playground which does not have a suitably sized flat area that could be used for court sports, plus there is a sunken drain area which floods in heavy rainfall.
Wimbledon Chase prides itself on its excellent links with parents, local residents, outside providers and the wider community. There is a great need to provide suitable facilities for sports that require an all-weather surface i.e. tennis, junior tennis, netball, 5-a-side football, unihoc etc. Due to budget restrictions the school is anxious to increase its annual income from lettings to outside users which will benefit the local community and the school. The current lack of suitable facilities greatly limits the possibilities of increasing income.
Our Physical Education and Healthy School Policies both state the school's aims regarding improving children's health, fitness, well-being and a wish to combat child obesity. We have highly committed and motivated staff who organise the many extra-curricular sports clubs and with improved facilities they are keen to extend further the number of clubs available to pupils. The school aims to encourage more sports and exercise together with healthy eating practices to improve the future health of all those involved in the school community.
Wimbledon is, of course, the global home of tennis, yet the local area fails to fully promote improvement and expansion of tennis facilities. The school aims to encourage local providers to use/hire the new facilities for local residents and the wider community, particularly those who may not be able to afford to join private tennis clubs in the area.
